'Coup Feathers'

American Plains Indians frequently displayed their victories with achievement markings on their feathers. Because the eagle held high spiritual meaning, its feathers were the preferred method of displaying the warrior's "coups." According to tribal law, an Indian warrior was not allowed to wear eagle feathers until such time he had earned them through acceptable war deeds.
